Origins
Shaped by East & West
Born in Los Angeles in the 1940s, Robert Byron Gottschall's formative years in Japan and Taiwan profoundly shaped his artistic vision drawing from Eastern philosophies, traditional craftsmanship, and Shinto-Buddhist art.
This rare fusion of Western classical training and Eastern spiritual depth became the signature language of his sculpture: work that speaks in the vocabulary of nature, yet carries the weight of philosophical inquiry.
His artistic journey spans Bellingham, Aspen, Santa Fe, Taos, Houston, and Austin each city deepening his mastery of organic materials, innovative carving techniques, and a profound philosophical approach to form and space.
